Our Mississauga dentists can diagnose and help treat temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder to assist in alleviating commons symptoms, such as jaw pain and headaches.
The Temporomandibular Joint
The temporomandibular joint (or TMJ) is a hinge that connects your jaw to the temporal bones of your skull. It lets you move your jaw up and down and side to side so you can talk and eat. A disorder of this joint can cause a host of issues with your jaw and the muscles in your face.
Causes & Symptoms
The most common cause of TMJ disorder is a misalignment of the teeth or jaw. Other factors that may contribute to the disorder include skull shape, genetics, airway issues or jaw trauma.
TMJ disorder can cause a variety of painful symptoms, which can worsen during stressful times. Common symptoms include:
- Jaw, face and/or neck pain
- Headaches and migraines
- Ringing in the ears
- Teeth grinding or clenching (usually during sleep)
At Creditview Dental, we can test for, diagnose and provide a treatment plan for TMJ disorder.
Treatment may include relaxation techniques and wearing a mouthguard for sleep.
Your dentist may also suggest a TENS machine, an electrical stimulation device that encourages the face and jaw muscles to relax.
Untreated, TMJ issues can eventually lead to eroded jawbones and loose teeth. If you are experiencing any symptoms, visit your dentist for a proper diagnosis.
