Common Dental Emergencies

The following conditions are dental emergencies and should be treated as soon as possible.

  • Lost fillings or crowns

If you have a lost or broken crown or filling, try to locate it and, if possible, rinse it off and place it back on the tooth.

Call our office right away to let us know you need an appointment.

  • Broken or chipped teeth

If you have a broken or chipped tooth, try to locate the missing piece if you can because your dentist may be able to reattach it.

Whether you can find it or not, call our office as soon as possible to get it fixed.

  • Knocked-out Teeth

If you have a knocked-out tooth, try to find the tooth if you can and re-insert it in the socket (be sure it is free of debris first). Bite down on the tooth gently but firmly.

If you are unable to replace the tooth in the socket, keep it moist by holding it in your mouth or placing it in a glass of milk until you can get to our office.

Call our office as soon as possible. The sooner you get here after knocking out your tooth, the better chance your dentist will be able to save it.

  • Severe swelling

If you are experiencing severe swelling in your mouth, face or neck, and if the swelling causes difficulty swallowing or breathing, call our office as soon as possible.

We will help determine what is causing the swelling and the best way to treat it.

  • Abscessed Tooth

A tooth abscess is a pocket of pus from a bacterial infection in your gums. Symptoms of an abscessed tooth can include swelling; pain that may radiate to your jawbone, neck, or ear; a bad taste in your mouth; an open sore on your gums; and loosening of the affected tooth.

If you suspect you have a tooth abscess, call our office as soon as possible. Left untreated, the infection in an abscessed tooth can spread to other areas of the body.
