Family Dentist Mississauga Thumb SuckingThumb sucking—a natural and common habit for most toddlers, right? Yes, that is true. However, excessive thumb sucking isn’t something to ignore. It’s better to break that habit before it does damage to your child’s teeth. Drs. Brian Kaplansky and Parneety Randhawa, family dentists in Mississauga, offer some key information regarding thumb-sucking and dental issues.

Why do children suck their thumbs?

It’s a natural reaction, and thumb sucking typically decreases after the age of 6 months to a year. Most babies suck their thumbs because it is soothing, and toddlers tend to be thumb-suckers when they are hungry, tired or upset. This is a way for babies and toddlers to calm down, but excessive thumb sucking poses a problem for a child’s oral health.

Thumb-sucking and dental problems

Typically, after the age of 4, children stop sucking their thumbs. However, there are some children that have turned thumb sucking into a habit—a bad habit. With prolonged thumb-sucking, children put extra pressure on the front teeth and may cause the following:
  • Problems with the development of the mouth
  • Changes to the roof of the mouth
  • Misalignment of the teeth

The thumb’s pressure on the sides of the upper jaw can cause the jaw to narrow, and that is how the lower and upper teeth can shift outwards. If your child’s bottom and top teeth don’t come together, there might be some malocclusion problems in the works. It’s important to talk to your Mississauga family dentists for dental advice.
