A patient of mine recently thanked me for being partly responsible for his rapid rise in the business world. He was referring to the 8 veneers that we placed on his upper front teeth a few years ago, which gave him a beautiful and confident smile. Of course it made me feel great, but it also prompted me to do some research on the relationship between an attractive smile and career success. It didn't surprise me at all to learn that there is statistical evidence to support the theory that a beautiful smile opens doors in every aspect of our lives.
According to research studies, 93 percent of a first impression is formed by nonverbal body language within three to seven seconds. Employment experts confirm that the quality and sincerity of your smile is the single most important determining factor of that first impression. A genuine smile that is supported by good looking teeth speaks volumes about the candidate looking for employment, looking for acceptance into university programs, looking for a salary increase, looking for a job promotion, looking for their life partner, and the list goes on and on.
Employment research tells us that candidates with an unforced, confident, and natural smile appear to be more optimistic, energetic, and genuinely happy. They portray a sense of well being, good health, and an ability to work well with others. These attributes are exactly what employers are looking for. Employers have already seen your qualifications and have determined that you have the necessary requirements for the position. What they are looking for in the interview however, are clues to your personality. As an employer myself, I have interviewed hundreds of candidates for a multitude of positions, and to be very honest, my decisions are usually made within seconds of meeting the candidate. I am looking for a confident smile, and apparently a majority of employers are as well.
If you are fortunate enough to have been born with beautiful teeth and a beautiful smile, then you are miles ahead of your competition. If, on the other hand, you aren't happy with the look of your teeth or gums, then chances are that you aren't so quick to flash that big smile that employers are looking for. You have probably learned to smile without showing your teeth, or you subconsciously put your hand over your mouth when you are laughing, or you simply choose not to smile. What to do?
The solution may be as simple as purchasing an over- the- counter teeth whitening system if the shape, size, and positioning of your teeth are fine. If that doesn't work, then you may want to consider professional bleaching of your teeth which is very affordable. By the way, when you are whitening or bleaching your teeth, be sure not to consume red wine, coffee, tea, coke, or blueberries. Throughout the process your teeth will be temporarily more porous and therefore more susceptible to staining. If your cosmetic issues are more complex than the colour and shade of your teeth, then you may want to have a Smile Analysis performed. This is done at a consultation appointment for a Cosmetic Dental Makeover, but it is something that you can begin to do in front of your own mirror at home.
1. Determine the colour, shape, and positioning of your upper and lower teeth
2. Determine the length and width of your upper 6 teeth and their relative dimensions as they relate to one another
3. Determine whether you reveal your upper or lower teeth when smiling, and how much tooth structure is visible when smiling
4. Determine how much gum tissue you show at rest and during various degrees of smiling
5. Determine the masculinity and femininity of your smile
6. Determine whether the size and shape of your teeth match the size and shape of your face
The second step is to come up with a treatment plan with your cosmetic dentist, that best meets your wants and needs according to your timetable and budget. Thanks to 21st century dental technology, the actual treatments are surprisingly painless and usually within 2 to 3 weeks, you will have your new smile. The combination of laser dentistry to deal with the soft tissue components of your smile, and the latest techniques including dental Implants, veneers, and cosmetic dental materials for your teeth, will form the basis of your Smile Makeover. According to employment experts, this will definitely help open the doors to your future success.
By the way, my wife will tell you that she married me for my smile. It certainly wasn't for my money. I was penniless when we first met :)
