Crowns are a great way to hide unsightly teeth and provide additional support for weakened tooth structure. Here at Creditview Dental in Mississauga, ON, Dr. Brian Kaplansky uses dental crowns to treat patients' smiles. Read on to learn what this versatile treatment can do for you!
More about Dental Crowns
The crowns are synthetic cap-like dental appliances that are placed on top of damaged teeth in order to restore function and appearance, as well as to protect teeth after a restorative procedure. Unlike veneers, crowns don't just cover the front surface of teeth and are more durable.
Crowns also help with:
- Attaching bridges
- Covering implants
- Prevents an existing filling from becoming loose or dislocated
Getting a crown isn't complicated or painful, and it actually fairly routine. First, the existing tooth structure is reduced so that the crown can fit over it. Next, your Mississauga dentist takes an impression of the newly remodeled tooth to create a custom-designed crown. A lab then takes the impression and manufactures a custom-designed crown. During this time, you will receive a temporary crown until its permanent counterpart is ready. Once the finalized crown arrives, it is cemented in place.
Crowns don't require special care and may last up to eight years or longer. All you need to do is maintain a healthy oral regimen, including daily brushing/flossing and regular visits to the dentist. If you have a jaw clenching or teeth grinding issue, make sure you get nightguards and avoid sugary food that can cause serious decay.

Root canal therapy is a reliable and comfortable restorative procedure. Performed in-office by your dentist, Dr. Brian Kaplansky and Dr. Aliki Divaris, at Creditview Dental in Mississauga, ON, root canals avoid extraction and heal infection. Do you need root canal therapy?
Inside an ailing tooth
Deep inside each tooth is a network of blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. If damaged by decay or injury or invaded by bacteria, this soft interior pulp becomes infected, causing destructive and uncomfortable symptoms.
Fortunately, your Mississauga, ON, dentist can remove that pulp from a tooth's central chamber and narrow canals which run down each root. The tooth functions well without the pulp and can last indefinitely when sealed and crowned by a root canal procedure.
It starts with a complete examination and X-rays. If Dr. Kaplansky determines root canal therapy is the right option, he will numb the tooth and drill a tiny hole into the tooth. This opening allows him to extract the pulp, shape the canal walls, and seal the area with a natural substance called gutta-percha.
The dentist cleans and seals each canal and covers the tooth with a temporary filling or cap. Healing takes a week or so, and then you return to the office for placement of a beautiful porcelain crown.
The American Association of Endodontists says that your fully restored tooth should last for the rest of your life. Just brush, floss, eat a healthy diet, and see your dentist semi-annually for a hygienic cleaning and check-up.
Signs you need a root canal
Sometimes, dental breakdown exhibits few to no symptoms. However, other teeth obviously are deteriorating and infected as evidenced by:
- Toothache pain
- Dental sensitivity to pressure, heat, cold, or sugar
- Jaw and gum swelling
- Drainage from the tooth
- Discoloration of tooth enamel
- A noticeable crack or large chip
- Pimples or sores on the gums near the tooth or its neighbors
Only your dentist can tell you the condition of your tooth and how to treat it.

Are you an adult living with tooth loss in Mississauga, ON? Wondering how our dentists Dr. Brian Kaplansky and Dr. Aliki Divaris can help you get your smile back on track after missing one or more teeth? If you said “yes” then you may be wondering whether dental implants are the right tooth replacement option for you. Of course, we know that you may have questions about this restoration so we want to provide you with the helpful answers you need.
What are dental implants?
While an implant is made up of three different parts the part that most people are curious about is the metal post. This metal post or screw is placed into the jawbone where it replaces your missing tooth roots. It even stimulates the jawbone to keep it healthy and to prevent bone loss.
The metal implant is durable enough to support everything from a single dental crown (to replace one tooth) to dentures (for replacing several or all of your teeth).
How long do dental implants last?
The longevity of your implant will depend on you and how well you care for your restoration. The implant itself is made from titanium, and because it fuses together naturally with bone and tissue it becomes a permanent structure within the jawbone. This means that with the proper care and hygiene your implant can last several decades, which could correspond to having this restoration for the rest of your life.
How long will it take to get an implant?
The process to get a dental implant takes time since we will need to perform surgery and then give your mouth up to six months to heal and fuse with the implant. Depending on how many implants you are getting and where they are being placed, the entire treatment process, from beginning to end, typically takes anywhere from six months to over one year.
Do I need to undergo surgery to get implants?
Yes. In order to get a dental implant our Mississauga, ON, restorative dentists will need to open up the gums in order to place the implant into the jawbone. This procedure is performed right here in our office under local anesthesia, which means that you can go home immediately after surgery.
Who is a good candidate for dental implants?
Most adults who are healthy are ideal candidates for dental implants. We will first need to examine your mouth to make sure that there is enough healthy jawbone present to support the implant.

What does your best smile look like? Straight, with no gaps, bite problems or crowding? If you lack these smile characteristics but wish to change the health and appearance of your teeth, Invisalign clear aligners may be for you. Provided by your dentists, Dr. Brian Kaplansky and Dr. Parneety Randhawa at Creditview Dental in Mississauga, Invisalign has numerous advantages, helping teens and adults feel confident during and after treatment.
Invisalign has changed orthodontics
Straightening crooked smiles since the late nineties, Invisalign clear aligners have offered patients a comfortable, invisible and effective way to correct mild to moderate orthodontic issues such as improper bite (malocclusion), gaps, crowding, overjet, tooth rotation, and more. Treatment time is half that of traditional braces, and the smooth, biocompatible aligners are non-irritating, discreet and removable for brushing, flossing, meals, and snacks.
Who can wear Invisalign aligners?
Many older teens and adults can. Just come see your dentist at Creditview Dental in Mississauga for a special examination and Invisalign scan. Dr. Kaplansky, a preferred Invisalign provider, can tell you if the system is right for your unique needs and lifestyle.
If it is, the Invisalign lab will fabricate 18 to 30 snap-on aligners which will progressive shift your teeth into positions which are healthier, easier to clean and of course, more attractive. While you wear your aligners (for 20 to 22 hours per day), no one will notice them but you and your dentist! When treatment is over, you'll keep your smile in perfect position by wearing a customized retainer.
Benefits of Invisalign
Adults just like you are enjoying the benefits of a smile which is well-aligned. In fact, the American Association of Orthodontists says that a full 20 percent of people undergoing orthodontic correction are over the age of 21. Millions in the US and across the world choose Invisalign as their orthodontic system because Invisalign aligners:
- Are removable, allowing you to eat whatever you wish and brushing and flossing with ease
- Cause no oral irritations the way metal braces can
- Are super-thin and cause no speech problems
- Predictably move teeth according to special computerized scans and imaging
